ScreenSteps 2.1 Public Beta: Post to Blog
Update 5/07/2008: Added screencast showing blog uploading.
Download URLS for 2.1 Beta:
We just wanted to announce that ScreenSteps 2.1 public beta is available. A couple of big changes in this one.
Post to WordPress, TypePad or Movable Type
First, the most exciting news. You can now publish directly to your own WordPress, TypePad or Movable Type blog using ScreenSteps. You no longer need to have a ScreenSteps Live account to publish to your blog. We think that this is very cool and so have our initial testers, so download the beta and try it out for yourself.
Here is a video showing off the feature:
Topics are now Manuals
The naming of Topics in the UI has been changed to Manuals. This is essentially what Topics are and we think that it will make the whole concept of how to use ScreenSteps much clearer. Why didn’t we call them Manuals from the start? At the time we had good reasons. They don’t seem as good now.
Download the Public Beta
There are a lot of other fixes in the release notes in case you are interested.
Download the public beta and let us know what you think:
You can see a lesson about how to configure the blog settings here.

Wow, posting direct to MT/WP/TP
I’d thought about requesting this but decided it would be asking too much. You’re exceeding my expectations - Very cool!
Can’t wait to try it out.

The blog posting feature is great timing!!
I just tried to post my tutorials to our wordpress blog last week and it was a nightmare. The html export had all this css in it that kept messing up my wordpress theme, so I had to redo the tutorial from scratch (except for the screenshots) to use them on the blog.
Having a streamlined way to publish them directly will definitely save some time. Do I have to download the beta seperately? Or will my current pro version be able to do it?

So, will this work for our own installs of WordPress or is it WordPress.com hosted blogs only?

I just checked, yeah, works great for self-hosted WordPress, as long as you change permissions on your Uploads folder 777 - fully executable to anyone, anywhere - not sure how safe that could be. But, yeah, the ScreenSteps part of it works great.

@Evan - If you want to use the beta you need to download it separately. Once we release version 2.1 you will be able to update to the release version from within the beta using Help->Check for Updates…
@WordSkill - We have tested it on both hosted and self installed WordPress blogs and it has worked fine.
It would be great to hear from people how posting to your blog works out. This is our first attempt at interfacing with the blog APIs so please report any problems or quirks so we can get them ironed out. We would like ScreenSteps content to incorporate as seamlessly as possible. You can email us using Help->Email Feedback.
Feel free to let us know if there are other services you would like to post to as well. We are currently looking into Blogger and are working on a Confluence wiki plugin.

The export to Wordpress works like a dream but I can’t see an option for exporting to Movable Type. It’s my current blogging software of choice and I would really love to export to it, is this feature still to be implemented?
Also the spell checker is a bit ropey, mine often hangs on the last letter of a word you’ve added to the dictionary.

@Dermo - I forgot to add a Movable Type option to the configuration menu but you can just select TypePad for now since they use the same API to upload lessons. We will be posting a version later on today with Movable Type added to the list. As for spell check - are you on Windows? I had one other report of this but I haven’t been able to replicate it yet. If you happen to have some text that caused the problem it would be great if you could send it to support at screensteps dot com so we can track down the problem.

I would love to get this to publish to Joomla - If you need help with this let me know!

@Nick A. - If you send an email to support telling us how would like to have the lessons integrate into Joomla then we can take a look.

Is there an easy way to send a lesson to a Wiki page. Preferably Apples new Wiki in 10.5. New we save as HTML and paste it in. Then link all the images. Kind of a pain.
May 7th, 2008 at 9:13 am
@Ken M - That depends on whether or not the wiki has a way for 3d party software to add content to the wiki. I spent a few minutes searching for information on this but didn’t come across anything. We don’t have access to the wiki so if you have any information on this send an email to support at screensteps dot com.

The uploading to WordPress is great! The only feature missing that would make it perfect for me is if it could sync the tags in ScreenSteps with tags in WordPress. Then if I organize all my documents in ScreenSteps they’ll be organized the same way on the blog.
I also had a little issue with Command + Zing. If i accidentally deleted something I couldn’t manage to Command + Z it back.

@Ben K - I took a quick glance at the XMLRPC apis for WordPress and didn’t see a way to set keywords for a post. If we can find a way to do it we could definitely add that in though.

I have a MT server that requires SSL for everything (yes, we’re paranoid). When I try to add the account using the ‘Web Export,’ I hit ‘Test Connection,’ and it doesn’t work.
Here is the error that I get:
Error: invalid response (error error:140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23GETSERVER_HELLO:unknown protocol).
I’m using the Mac version of the app.

Yes, https connections don’t work in the current beta. We are working on it though and hope to have it ironed out soon.

I love it!
